To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many claimants who have had benefits sanctions imposed for failure to attend or complete work placements under project work have applied for hardship payments; and how many of those have been successful. [21518]

The number of jobseekers who applied for hardship payments in the period October 1996 to November 1997 was 77,000. The number of hardship awards made for the same period was 70,000. A breakdown of hardship awards made by reasons for sanction is not available.
