The January 1997 School census showed 35,313 pupils aged 4 were receiving at least part-time education in maintained nursery, primary and special schools, of whom 1,017 were in nursery schools, 7,746 in nursery classes in primary schools and 136 in special schools. This compares with 35,251 at January 1996, of whom 1,044 were in nursery schools, 7,828 in nursery classes in primary schools and 131 in special schools. Nursery voucher redemption statistics indicate that 2,407 four-year-olds were receiving at least part-time nursery education in private and voluntary settings in the Summer term 1997.
