Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. Denis Murphy, dated 12 December 1997:The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking how many people are in receipt of Reduced Earnings Allowance (REA) in (a) the United Kingdom, (b) the benefit office area serving the Wansbeck constituency and (c) average benefit office areas of equivalent size.The information is not available in the format requested. REA statistics are available for the Benefits Agency Northumbria District, which includes the offices at Ashington, Berwick, Blyth, Hexham, North Shields and Wallsend, and for Great Britain.

In Great Britain it is estimated at 150,590. The figures are based on a ten per cent sample of all REA assessments.
Figures on average benefit office areas of equivalent size to the Wansbeck constituency are not available.
