§ Mr. Charles KennedyTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his Department's definition of grass-fed animals for the purposes of food labelling; in what circumstances animals fed on silage or concentrates are deemed to be grass-fed; and if he will make a statement. [19844]
Mr. John Cunningham[holding answer 9 November 1997]: Under the Beef Labelling Scheme, launched earlier this year, it is for my Department to approve any definition of "grass-fed" submitted by an applicant. However, I would expect any such definition to cover animals reared primarily on grass in the field.
