HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 c499W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Brazilian Government concerning the eucalyptus plantation established by Aracruz Cellulose on land previously occupied by Tupirikim Guarani Indians. [19710]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

After meeting representatives of the Tupinikim and Guarani Indians, I wrote to the Brazilian Ambassador on 1 July about their claim to land occupied by Aracruz Cellulose. I also raised it with the Head of the National Foundation for Assistance to Indians (FUNAI), when I visited Brazil in September 1997. Our Embassy in Brasilia continues to monitor this particular case. My right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary raised other indigenous issues with the Brazilian Foreign Minister during their talks on 3 December.
