HC Deb 09 December 1997 vol 302 cc494-5W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what research his Department has undertaken into the environmental damage arising from burning of aviation fuel(a) at ground level and (b) in the upper atmosphere. [19742]

Ms Glenda Jackson

We continue to support research on the nature and effects of local and global emissions from aircraft engines. Many of these projects are major international collaborative efforts. The Department has a leading role in the International Civil Aviation Organisation's environmental committee, which includes an emissions group. It also supports participation by UK experts in major science and technology assessments, for example the European inventory of aircraft NOx emissions and the current assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of aviation and the environment.
