§ Mr. WareingTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to amend the law as it applies to the cross-examination of prosecution witnesses in cases of alleged sexual assault and related areas; and if he will make a statement. [40550]
§ Mr. Maclean[holding answer 15 October 1996]: The Criminal Justice Act 1988 already prohibits a defendant from questioning a child witness in cases of sexual offences and cruelty. My right hon. and learned Friend announced on 8 October that he would like to see similar protection extended to protect victims of alleged sexual assault. A review is being undertaken to look at ways in which this might best be achieved.
