HC Deb 16 October 1996 vol 282 c1008W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to amend the law as it applies to the cross-examination of prosecution witnesses in cases of alleged sexual assault and related areas; and if he will make a statement. [40550]

Mr. Maclean

[holding answer 15 October 1996]: The Criminal Justice Act 1988 already prohibits a defendant from questioning a child witness in cases of sexual offences and cruelty. My right hon. and learned Friend announced on 8 October that he would like to see similar protection extended to protect victims of alleged sexual assault. A review is being undertaken to look at ways in which this might best be achieved.
