To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he is taking to measure and evaluate the effect of his Department's policies on women. [5482]

The Department of Transport is committed to the aim on policy appraisal of the guidance for equal treatment and is active in examining statistics for evidence of differential effects of policy as between men and women; identifying women's concerns; working with the transport industry to accommodate these concerns in the design and provision of transport and pedestrian environments; and encouraging women to enter and progress in the transport industries.

The Department is guided in its work by a women's transport network comprising women and men from the transport industries, local government and research organisations.
