Mr. Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment (1) how many(a) full-time and (b) part-time lecturers were employed in the further education sector (i) nationally and (ii) in the west midlands in 1979; [4963]

(2) how many (a) full-time and (b) part-time lecturers were employed in the further education sector (i) nationally and (ii) in the west midlands in each year since 1992; and what was the percentage change on the previous year. [4967]

Mr. Paice

Comprehensive information on the number of full and part-time further education lecturers is not available. The total full-time equivalents of these lecturers in England in the years specified are shown in the following table although, as explained in the footnotes, the figures are not on the same basis for all years. Information is not available separately for the west midlands.

Full-time equivalent lecturers (thousands)
Academic year in LEA maintained FE colleges, excluding sixth-form colleges and colleges of HE1 providing FE in FE or HE institutions, including sixth-forms colleges percentage changes from previous year2
1979–80 66.0
1992–93 65.6 67.7 -2
1993–94 67.8 0
1994–95 69.2 +2
Notes:
1 Colleges of HE were LEA maintained prior to 1988, but not subsequently. The 1979–80 figure in this column therefore includes lecturers in colleges of HE, but the 1992–93 figure does not, so the two are not directly comparable.
2 The percentage change in 1992–93 is calculated from the information in the first column, for which the 1991–92 figure—not shown—is 66.9 thousand. The percentage changes in 1993–94 and 1994–95 are calculated from the information in the second column.

Mr. Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many full-time lecturers have been employed in the higher education sector(a) nationally and (b) in the west midlands in each year since 1992; and what was each figure as a percentage change on the previous year. [4901]
