§ Mr. Austin Mitchell
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what proposals he has for checking the rise in the pound;
(2) if he will list the performance of the pound sterling against the other currencies of the European monetary system in terms of the 2 per cent. and the 6 per cent. bands for every quarter since the last quarter of 1992.
§ Mrs. Angela Knight
The Government recognise the value of a stable exchange rate but do not have a target for sterling. The exchange rate is only one of many factors that has to be taken account of in policy decisions.
Data on sterling exchange rates against other EU currencies can be found in "Main Economic Indicators", which is published monthly by the OECD.
