§ Mr. Baldry[holding answer 15 November 1996]: In the Fisheries Council I have called for more collaborative research in order to increase our understanding of the impact of industrial fisheries on other species, I have successfully pressed for measures to reduce herring mortality in industrial fisheries in line with advice received from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, I have urged the need for the next multi-annual guidance programme to deal adequately with the industrial fisheries fleet and I am supporting tighter by-catch rules in the sandeel fishery as part of new technical conservation measures.
