EU Maternal and Child Health Budget Line (Hansard, 5 November 1996)

§ Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) how many and which projects have been funded by the EU maternal and child health budget line for(a) 1994, (b) 1995 and (c) 1996; and what is the total amount of funding allocated for these projects; [2008]

(3) which agencies and non-governmental organisations are responsible for projects funded by the EU maternal and child health budget line for (a) 1994, (b) 1995 and (c) 1996; in which countries the projects are conducted; and what is their duration. [2009]

§ Dr. Liam Fox

The projects funded are as follows:

1994

1. Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat: support for Commonwealth reproductive health programme in east, central and southern Africa, duration 40 months.
2. Marie Stopes International (UK): testing the effectiveness of a community based network in Bolivia, duration 26 months.
3. Marie Stopes International (UK): studies on a family life education programme and a family planning education programme in Kenya, duration 20 months.
4. International Planned Parenthood Federation Resources Development Department: expanding family planning services in the Caribbean—Belize, Guyana, St. Lucia—in the wider context of reproductive health, duration 28 months.

1995

This budget line had no appropriations for that fiscal year.

1996

1. University of Wales: review of three maternal and child health projects funded by the EC, duration five months.
2. Walter Kessler: study on the problems of integrating Maternal and Child Health into financial health programmes, duration 14 months.
3. Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat: operation research to demonstrate the impact of a package of low cost and sustainable intervention to reduce perinatal, neonatal and maternal mortality and morbidity in selected districts in Zimbabwe, duration 28 months.

The total amount committed for the EU maternal and child health budget line was 2,306,250 ECU for years 1994 to 1996. No funds are committed for 1997.
