The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked the Director of the ONS to reply to your parliamentary question on regional unemployment. The Director has asked me to reply in his absence. The latest LFS estimates of unemployment for the standard regions of Great Britain on the internationally standard ILO definition relate to Summer (June-August) 1996 and are published in Table 16 of the Labour Force Survey Summer 1996 First Release. The corresponding average levels of unadjusted claimant unemployment for the same three month period can be obtained on-line from the Nomis database.
