§ Mr. CoxTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps his Department takes to monitor air pollution in the Greater London area; and if he will make a statement. [29978]
§ Mr. ClappisonThere are currently 13 automatic real time air quality monitoring sites in Greater London within the Department of the Environment's national network, listed in the table. In addition, there are more than 100 non-automatic monitoring sites within Greater London as follows: 90 nitrogen dioxide sites, 16 sulphur dioxide and smoke sites, three lead and multi-element sites and one site measuring toxic organic micropollutants.
As part of the expansion of the national automatic network, the Department aims to establish another two sites and integrate 11 locally operated monitoring sites within London, resulting in a total of 26 real time national monitoring sites in Greater London by the end of 1996.
