HC Deb 15 May 1996 vol 277 c484W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment when he will next meet representatives of the brewing industry to discuss the dangers of passive smoking in licensed premises. [29141]

Mr. Clappison

There are no plans to meet representatives of the brewing industry to discuss the dangers of passive smoking in licensed premises.

The implementation of smoking policies in licensed premises is a matter for the discretion of the manager in line with the Government's continuing voluntary policy, which encourages the implementation of suitable smoking policies in all enclosed public buildings. Guidance on implementing policies is given in the Government's code of practice on smoking in public places, which was published in December 1991. It makes it clear that the Government expect every effort to be made to cater for the interests of the non-smoker.
