HC Deb 13 May 1996 vol 277 c362W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what protests Her Majesty's Government have made to the Russian Government about an operation to dump 20 elderly nuclear submarines at sea. [27855]

Mr. Hanley

No protest has been made. Media reports of such an operation have not been substantiated. At the Moscow nuclear safety and security summit on 20 April, President Yeltsin stated that Russia would formally accept in 1996 the 1993 amendment to the London convention 1972 banning the dumping at sea of all radioactive waste.
