Dr. Strang

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many days per week he estimates will be devoted by each slaughterhouse to the slaughter of cattle over the age of 30 months. [28324]

Mr. Baldry

[holding answer 7 May 1996]: This will vary from slaughterhouse to slaughterhouse. Some will devote their full capacity to the slaughter of these cattle while others will slaughter them on different numbers of full days each week.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many slaughterhouses he estimates will be involved in the slaughter of cattle over the age of 30 months. [28322]

[holding answer 7 May 1996]: We expect 40 to 50 slaughterhouses to be involved initially. If necessary, this number will be increased in the light of experience.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food which officials will be responsible for supervising the slaughter of cattle over the age of 30 months. [28323]

Mr. Baldry

[holding answer 7 May 1996]: Officials of the Meat Hygiene Service will supervise the slaughter of these animals.
