HC Deb 07 May 1996 vol 277 cc85-6W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had and with whom on elections in the Indian-occupied area of Kashmir, with particular reference to(a) the involvement of the military forces now stationed in this area and (b) the quality of the candidates; and if he will make a statement. [28024]

Mr. Hanley

My right hon. and learned Friend the Foreign Secretary and I have had discussions with a wide range of people, including officials, Members of Parliament and others on the various aspects of the forthcoming parliamentary elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The need to develop a genuine political process remains an important part our long-standing policy on Kashmir. Elections can contribute to that process.

Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he has had with the British high commissioners for India and Pakistan regarding the proposed elections to take place in Indian-controlled Kashmir; and if he will make a statement. [27946]

Mr. Hanley

Our high commissioners in New Delhi and Islamabad report regularly on developments concerning Kashmir, including the forthcoming parliamentary election. I discussed Kashmir with them during my recent visits to India and Pakistan.
