HC Deb 07 May 1996 vol 277 c71W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many new rented homes housing associations will be able to start in 1996; and what were the figures for each of the past three years. [28071]

Mr. Clappison

Figures covering the last three years showing the number of project approvals made for new housing association rented accommodation in England areas follows:

Project approvals for rented housing: self contained and shared accommodation
Housing Corporation HAG funded units Local authority HAG funded units Total HAG funded units
1993–94 43,857 19,226 63,083
1994–95 39,992 17,076 57,068
1995–96 23,792 11,394 35,186

These figures cover new rented accommodation provided through a new build and the purchase and rehabilitation of existing properties. In addition, over this period, the Housing Corporation has also approved home ownership incentive schemes which release existing social rented homes for reletting.

The Housing Corporation's approved development programme for 1996–97, which excludes local authority HAG, provides for between 21,300 and 26,100 project approvals for new rented housing in England. In addition, the Housing Corporation estimates that there will be a further 18,500 to 21,700 ADP approvals in 1996–97 including home ownership incentive schemes. Additional lettings will result from local authority support for housing associations.
