To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 27 March,Official Report, column 637, if he will make a statement on the (a) defence and (b) wider foreign policy aims underlying the decisions to provide military training assistance to (i) Indonesia, (ii) Guatemala and (iii) Sudan between 1 January 1991 and 31 December 1995; and what assistance is being provided to (i), (ii) and (iii) currently. [holding answer 22 May 1996]: The defence and wider foreign policy aims which underlie the provision of military training assistance include the promotion of peace and stability, the spread of democratic values and the strengthening of standards in the armed forces. Details of the assistance provided is confidential between Governments; however, no military training assistance is currently being provided to Sudan.
