To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many local education authorities have withdrawn foreign language assistants from secondary schools on grounds of financial constraints. [39115]

Twelve Scottish local authorities have decided to not employ foreign language assistants for their schools for 1996–97. The reasons for this are entirely a matter for the authorities concerned.
