HC Deb 22 July 1996 vol 282 cc4-5W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps the Government are taking to restrain the increase in house prices. [38017]

Mrs. Angela Knight

Monetary policy is set in order to achieve underlying inflation in the lower half of the 1 to 4 per cent. range by the end of this Parliament and to keep it at 2½ or less thereafter. House prices are just one of the many indicators used in monitoring the outlook for inflation. House price increases are expected to be held in check as more sellers are encouraged back into the market.
