§ Mr. BowisThe Department does not routinely collect information on hospital closures. However, inter-authority comparisons and consultancy was commissioned in 1994 to conduct a national survey of learning disability hospital closures and closure plans. A copy of its report is in the Library. It is estimated that, at 31 March 1995, there were 9,300 people with a length of stay of one year or more in national health service hospitals and units under the mental handicap (learning disability) specialty.
