To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what new proposals he has to improve the safety of passenger-carrying ferries. [34706]

Mr. Norris

We shall be implementing changes to the SOLAS-safety of lives at sea—convention agreed at the International Maritime Organisation's diplomatic conference in November 1995, concerning evacuation procedures, life-saving equipment and enhanced operational requirements, and we are preparing regulations to implement the Stockholm agreement on ferry survivability.
