HC Deb 08 July 1996 vol 281 cc70-1W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he expects to make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's cycling strategy; and if he will make a statement. [35952]

Mr. Norris

The national cycling strategy will be launched at a conference in London on 10 July. It is a consensus document, which we hope will be widely adopted by local authorities, other public bodies, and commercial interests. The Department of Transport endorses the main thrust of the strategy and will be contributing to the actions proposed, and other Government Departments are likely to do so as well. It is expected that the strategy will continue to evolve, and to adjust to circumstances, under the aegis of a standing national cycling forum.

Mr. David Young

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has to require cyclists to carry identification plates and third party insurance. [35947]

Mr. Norris

We have no plans to require cyclists to carry identification plates and third party insurance.
