§ 22. Mr. Simon HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what major works are programmed for 1996 for London Underground. [7463]
§ Mr. NorrisLondon Underground has recently announce a comprehensive programme of investment in a number of essential infrastructure projects over the next year or so. Construction of the Jubilee line extension will continue throughout 1996.
§ Mr. Austin-WalkerTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proportion of London Underground operating costs are met by income from fares, income from commercial sources, and subsidy or grant; and what estimate he has made of the equivalent figures for public transport in(a) Amsterdam, (b) Paris, (c) Berlin and (d) Rome. [9158]
§ Mr. NorrisIn 1994–95 London Underground's income from fares represented 115 per cent. of its operating costs, before provision for depreciation, renewals and reorganisation costs. Income from all other sources represented 5 per cent. of operating costs. No grant or subsidy was required to meet operating costs, though total grant of £776 million was paid to London Transport to fund capital investment. I have made no estimate of the equivalent figures for the four cities listed.

§ 24. Mr. Robert BanksTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to improve the A4 access to London. [7465]
§ Mr. WattsThere are two schemes in the national roads programme which will improve traffic flow and access on the A4. The preferred route for the junction improvements at Henley's and Waggoners corners should be announced shortly and the M4–A4 link, near Boston Manor road is in preparation for the longer term.
Improvements are also proposed for Moor roundabout and adjacent junctions in association with the proposed Prospect park development.
More modest long-term proposals are being considered at Boston Manor road junction, and for a new junction near Harlington corner.
The A4 within London is part of the red route network. This is designed to improve the movement of traffic and implementation begins in February.
