HC Deb 22 February 1996 vol 272 c264W
Mr. Congdon

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to review the Zoo Licensing Act 1981. [17298]

Mr. Clappison

In consultation with the Scottish and Welsh Offices, my Department is about to embark on a review of the operation of this Act, which provides for a system of inspection and licensing of zoos in Great Britain. Views are being sought from the relevant local authority associations and other interested bodies. The review will also provide an opportunity to consider the European Commission's proposals for a recommendation on zoos, which are currently being considered by the Environment Council.
