Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of the Prison Service budget was spent on security for(a) 1993–94, (b) 1994–95 and (c) 1995–96; what is the projected percentage for 1996–97; and if he will make a statement. [15903]

[holding answer 21 February 1996]: Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the temporary Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Alex Carlile, dated 22 February 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the percentage of Prison Service budget spent on security. Estimates of current expenditure on security are not available. Staff in prison establishments are multi-functional and all are responsible for ensuring that security is maintained. In most capital projects it is not possible to identify integral security costs. expenditure on overt security devices, for example perimeter walls and closed circuit television is recorded in the table below.
