HL Deb 07 February 1996 vol 569 cc19-20WA
The Countess of Mar

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the use (in tonnes) of (i) organochlorinc, (ii) organophosphate and (iii) carbonate pesticides, herbicides and fungicides in the United Kingdom in 1950 and the most recent date for which records are available, and what was the value of these sales to the industry at current rates.

Lord Lucas:

The Government only holds comprehensive information on pesticide usage for the period 1974 to 1994 and only for agricultural uses. The Government cannot therefore comment on usage levels in 1950. The agricultural uses of organochlorinc, organophosphate and carbamatc herbicides, fungicides and other agricultural pesticides in the United Kingdom for 1974 and 1994 were:

1974 1994
Organochlorines
herbicides None 4.76
fungicides Less than 0.01 tonnes 0.40 tonnes
other agricultural pesticides 255.01 tonnes 81.24
Total 255.01 tonnes 86.40
Organophosphates
herbicides None None
fungicides None 32.91 tonnes
other agricultural pesticides 349.93 tonnes 666.14 tonnes
Total 349.93 tonnes 699.05 tonnes
Carbamates
herbicides 463.00 tonnes 223.64 tonnes
fungicides None 38.40 tonnes
other agricultural pesticides 66.53 tonnes 258.33 tonnes
Total 529.53 tonnes 520.37 tonnes

The Government do not hold details of the value to industry of sales of different classes of herbicides, fungicides or other agricultural pesticides.
