HC Deb 17 December 1996 vol 287 c579W
Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the traditional police helmet will be replaced by a new design. [9217]

Mr. Maclean

This is an operational matter for chief officers of police.

I understand that the Association of Chief Police Officers established a uniform project group in 1995 to research the national requirements for uniform and uniform-related equipment. Among the issues that the group is considering is the design of the traditional helmet, having regard for the need to afford police officers adequate protection.

It is important to preserve the reassuring image and tradition which the existing helmet helps bring to officers on foot patrol. We are, therefore, working with ACPO to ensure that any redesign of the helmet fully takes into account this unique symbol of the British "bobby" and will seek to preserve the traditional style so far as it is compatible with affording officers the protection they deserve.
