To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many Venezuelan citizens are being detained in prisons in the United Kingdom. [7307]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Keith Vaz, dated 10 December 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many Venezuelan citizens are being detained in prisons in the United Kingdom. On 31 October 1996 (the latest date for which figures are available) there were 13 Venezuelan nationals in custody in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales. Information on prisoners in Scotland and in Northern Ireland is available from the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively.
