HL Deb 05 December 1996 vol 576 c64WA
Lord Addington

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of the proposed national teacher training curriculum will be given to the recognition of disabilities among children.

Baroness Miller of Hendon

The national curriculum for initial teacher training, covering the core subjects of English, mathematics and science, will specify what teachers need to know to teach all pupils effectively. We shall also introduce new standards for all newly qualified teachers. These will take into account, among other things, the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice, which came into force after the current requirements were issued.

Lord Addington

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What organisations they are consulting about proposed changes to the teacher training curriculum.

Baroness Miller of Hendon

The Teacher Training Agency is drawing up proposals for the new teacher training curriculum in consultation with a number of interested bodies and individuals. When my right honourable friend commissioned this work, she promised full public consultation on detailed proposals in the new year. This will involve all interested bodies and organisations and also give individuals an opportunity to comment.
