To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many unannounced prison visits have been made by the chief inspector of prisons since 1 January; and to which prisons in England and Wales. [26090]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prisons Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 24 April 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking how many unannounced prison visits have been made by the Chief Inspector of Prisons since 1 January; and to which prisons in England and Wales. Since 1 January HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, or members of HM Inspectorate, have made four announced inspections of Prison Service establishments. The establishments inspected were Sudbury, Preston and Dartmoor prisons and Aylesbury young offender institution.
