Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 23 April 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about how many category A (a) male and (b) female prisoners are serving a life prison sentence in prisons in England and Wales. On 17 April 1996 there were 326 male and one female category A prisoners serving life sentences in prisons in England and Wales.

There are currently 22 prisons in England and Wales which hold Category A prisoners on a regular basis.

The latest available information is for 29 February 1996. On that date there were 3, 277 male and 122 female life sentence prisoners in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales.
