To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many visitors to prisons in England and Wales were charged with attempting to import drugs into prisons during 1995. [26088]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 23 April 1996: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about how many visitors to prisons in England and Wales were charged with attempting to import drugs into prisons during 1995. Charges relating to offences by visitors of attempting to bring drugs into prisons are brought by the police. There are no central records held by the police or Prison Service on the number of such charges and this information could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
