The Secretary of State for Transport has asked me to reply to your recent question about how the Highways Agency budget for 1996–97 is to be distributed between (a) regions and (b) individual schemes.Information relating to planned 1996–97 expenditure was published in our Business Plan on 1 April. For the National Trunk Road Programme funds are not allocated to regions but to individual schemes. An allocation of £713 million has been made for expenditure on the attached list of National Schemes and on settlements for some completed schemes. Levels of expenditure on individual schemes will be determined by the speed at which works progress during the year.
