To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what total level of compensation has been given to farmers for the destruction of cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy in each year since 1990 in Scotland. [22935]

The information requested is held centrally on the basis of Great Britain as a whole, and a breakdown by country could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The total level of compensation paid to farmers on a Great Britain basis in each year since 1990 was:

  • 1990: £12.3 million
  • 1991: £28.1 million
  • 1992: £56.3 million
  • 1993: £92.6 million
  • 1994: £116.2 million
  • 1995: £126.6 million
