Letter from Neil A. H. McKerrow to Mr. Paddy Tipping, dated 2 April 1996:
You asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the following questions:—
- (1) "What is the number and size of Forestry Commission woodlands sold in total and by each year since 1981 in (a) England, (b) Wales and (c) Scotland and the amount of income received in total and in each year since 1981 for the sales in each country".
- (2) "if he will list the number, size and location of Forestry Commission woodlands sold since 1981 for which access agreements have been concluded".
As the questions you raised relate to matters that are undertaken by Forest Enterprise, the questions have been passed to me for reply. In reply to the first question, lists of all Forestry Commission disposals for the years 1981–1995 are placed yearly in the Library of the House of Commons and contain the information on individual disposals you require. I enclose copies of these for your use.A breakdown of income received by country is not held centrally. However, the total receipts from sales throughout Britain are as follows:157W
Year ended 31 March Total receipts £ million 1981 4.5 1982 6.9 1983 14.6 1984 23.6 1985 22.1 1986 17.0 1987 14.7 1988 13.1 1989 12.4 1990 13.0 1991 12.0 1992 14.5

You asked for information from 1981 but the arrangements for public access agreements were only introduced in October 1991 and the list, therefore, only covers disposals since then.
