HC Deb 31 October 1995 vol 265 c232W
Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proportion of Britain's direct peacekeeping expenditure is spent in low-income developing countries; and where it is spent. [40205]

Sir Nicholas Bonsor

Britain will contribute an estimated £144 million in assessed contributions to UN peacekeeping in 1995–96, of which £85 million relates to former Yugoslavia. The remainder is accounted for by 13 UN operations in middle and low-income countries in Africa, Asia, the middle east, the caribbean and the former soviet union.

Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many British troops have served in the last two years in a peacekeeping capacity in low-income developing countries; and where they have served. [40206]

Sir Nicholas Bonsor

In the last two years, British logistics support groups of some 600 troops have served with UN operations in Rwanda and Angola. During 1993 British military observers served with the UN missions in Western Sahara and Cambodia.
