Two types of £2 coin have been issued this year. The first commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the second the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations. In 1996, a commemorative £2 coin will be issued to mark the European Football Championship to be held in England.

The question of the issue of a general circulation £2 coin is under consideration as part of the United Kingdom coinage review, about which an announcement will be made in due course.
