HC Deb 25 October 1995 vol 264 c665W
32. Mr. Rendel

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in which other European Union states British citizens can vote or stand in those countries' local elections. [36888]

Mr. David Davis

British citizens will be able to vote and stand in the local elections of any country of the European Union, under the same conditions as nationals of that country, once those countries have passed the necessary domestic legislation. Such legislation has already been passed in Denmark, Sweden, Ireland and Austria, and is under way in the remaining countries of the European Union. Limited exceptions may be made in areas with a high concentration of non-nationals, or when an elected office involves influence at national level.
