HC Deb 18 October 1995 vol 264 cc297-8W
Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many(a) secondary and (b) primary school children have been permanently excluded in each of the last five years. [35836]

Mr. Robin Squire

Returns made under the national exclusions reporting system showed that 2,190 pupils were permanently excluded between April 1990 and April 1991, and 3,883 between April 1991 and April 1992. Of these, 13 per cent. were primary pupils in year one, and 14 per cent. in year two. Figures for the academic year 1992–93 are not available centrally.

A survey published by the Department in July showed that, in the academic year 1993–94, 8,960 secondary and 1,230 primary pupils were permanently excluded in the 101 LEAs that responded; in addition 434 pupils were permanently excluded from special schools.
