Dr. Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage if she will list the total cost of travel expenses claimed by civil servants using their own vehicles for official business in each of the last five years in her Department; and what would have been the saving in the last year if the maximum rate that could be claimed was set at the lowest rate. [36362]

Mr. Sproat

My Department was created only in April 1992.

The available figures for standard rate motor mileage claims in my Department are as follows

  • 1993–94: £82,273
  • 1994–95: £75,210.28

For the period 13 April 1992 to 31 March 1993 the information is not available in the format requested.

The saving in the last year if the maximum rate that could be claimed was set at the lowest rate—until 1 October 1995—of 35.7p per mile would be £1,985.36.
