§ Mr. Menzies Campbell
To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what is the number of public swimming baths and recreation centres per head of population; what is the equivalent figure for other European Union member states; and if she will make a statement.
§ Mr. Sproat
Latest figures for England, based on 1991 population census and the Sports Council's sports facilities database, are for one swimming pool for every 43,429 of the population and one sports centre for every 32,572 of the population. Equivalent figures for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are the responsibility of the respective Secretaries of State. We do not hold comparative data for other European Union member states.
