1 Figures for total numbers of maintained schools in England include special schools.
2 Figures for numbers of maintained schools, primary, secondary and total, are derived from the January 1995 DfEE Annual Schools' Census, and exclude those schools which have closed subsequent to holding a ballot on GM status. Figures for the proportion of schools that have held GM ballots need to be viewed accordingly.
