HC Deb 29 November 1995 vol 267 cc712-3W
Sir Irvine Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is the average cost of obtaining an NVQ; and how many of these have been obtained in Sheffield. [2519]

Mr. Paice

Research carried out by KPMG Management Consultants in 1994 found that, among the 60 firms studied, the median cost to an employer for one member of staff obtaining a national vocational qualification was £200 on direct outlays, such as NVQ registration and certification fees. In addition, staff time was spent on training, assessment and other activities related to achieving an NVQ, and for the typical employer in that survey this amounted to around £3,000.

More than 2 million NVQs have been awarded since their launch. Information on the numbers awarded on the Sheffield area is not available
