To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish the ethnic breakdown of all prisoners in England and Wales at the last available date. [1531]

Information is only available for the last 5 years and is shown in the attached table.

Beith, dated 28 November 1995: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking for a breakdown of the current prison population by sex, age group and ethnic origin and for the same breakdown on 3 May 1979. Table one gives the age, sex and ethnic origin breakdown of the population for latest available date, 31 October 1995. Information on the ethnic breakdown of the prison population for 1979 is not available. An age and sex breakdown is available for June 1979 and is given in table two.
