To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current strength, by rank, of the Ministry of Defence police; what he expects it to be, by rank, in each of the next three years; and if he will make a statement. [2875]

The strength, by rank, of the Ministry of Defence police, as at 1 October 1995, was: chief constable, one; deputy chief constable, one; assistant chief constable, four; chief superintendent, seven; superintendent, 25; chief inspector, 58; inspector, 149; sergeant, 698; and constable 3,436.

The overall manpower requirements of the Ministry of Defence police are kept under constant review. We will issue consultative documents concerning our proposals for future defence police and guarding requirements shortly.
