To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many concerted acts of indiscipline have taken place at each prison in England and Wales in the current year and in each year since 1990; and if he will make a statement. [448]

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the temporary Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from A. J. Pearson to Mr. Alan Beith, dated 24 November 1995: The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent question about how many concerted acts of indiscipline have taken place at each prison in England and Wales in the current year and in each year since 1990. Concerted indiscipline takes place when two or more prisoners refuse to conform to the rules and regulations of a prison. Such incidents include both passive disobedience and active indiscipline. The information requested is provided in the attached table, a copy of which will be placed in the Library of the House.
