§ Dr. Lynne JonesTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will set out the criteria which will be used to determine non-detectable anti-personnel land mines. [1570]
§ Mr. David DavisWe are working to incorporate stringent specifications on the detectability of anti-personnel land mines into the 1981 United Nations weaponry convention. Specifically, we support a proposal from the International Committee of the Red Cross to the effect that
Anti-personnel mines shall incorporate in their construction, or have attached, in a manner not easily removable, material or a device that enables the mine to be detected by commonly available technical mine detection equipment and provides a response signal equivalent to a signal from 8 grams, or more, of iron in a single coherent mass".
